The school

A bench, not a lecture hall

Talk Bench opened so adults in central Tel Aviv could practise English in the room, not from a slide deck. We keep groups small, names on the table, and homework that fits a work week.

We are a private course school. We do not award degrees and we do not sit official exams. If you need a test date, we help you read the paper — you book the exam yourself.

Why this room

What makes a seat here different

Most adults who walk in already “know English.” They stall on the second sentence of a status update. We work that second sentence until it sounds like them.

You sit with the same teacher for a block of weeks. We record phrases you actually used, not a generic level label. Friday mornings are for catch-up, not new material.

Talk first, then tidy the grammar

We do not start with a worksheet. You speak, we catch the line that wobbled, then we write it clean on the board.

Street-level, in person

The door is on HaHashmonaim 88. If you cannot reach the room that week, the desk holds your seat — we do not switch you to a webinar.

Hours that match the city

Desk open Sunday to Thursday 09:00–18:00 and Friday 09:00–13:00. Evening tables start after 17:30 on weekdays.

How a week looks

Seats, papers, and the table — not a payment plan

The conversation table

Eight chairs, name cards, and a host who keeps the talk moving. You book a seat; you do not drop in mid-sentence.

Topics come from the city: a client dinner, a landlord call, a Friday train. We stop for one clean phrase, then send the table back into the story.

Exam-style papers

We drill exam-style reading papers with a timer and a pencil. We do not administer the exam. We do not claim a board licence.

You leave with marked papers and a short list of the traps you keep falling for — inference, tone, and the question that looks easier than it is.

Spoken English for work

Bring a real email or a stand-up line from your week. We rewrite it in your voice, then you say it to the room.

Groups stay small so every student gets a turn that sounds like their job, not a tourist phrasebook.

I used to write the update in Hebrew and translate it in my head. Jonah made me say the English first. The stand-up is shorter now.

The evening table is the only place I practise complaints that are polite and still clear. Guests hear the difference.

Sasha’s reading hour is strict with the clock and honest about what the question is really asking. No fake exam badge, which I wanted.

I book the Friday slot when I miss a weekday. The desk actually holds the chair. That is why I stayed.

Mira stops the table when we hide behind jokes. One clean sentence, then we go on. It is tiring in a good way.

English for suppliers used to be a script I printed. After four weeks I can change the order without calling a friend.
